Tap into the Dominican Republic’s vibrant manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture sectors by joining us for lunch with Ambassador Sonia Guzmán on Thursday, January 16. Through establishing relationships with the Dominican Republic, Utah businesses will gain access to the Caribbean and Latin American markets. Both Utah and the Dominican Republic are committed to fostering economic growth, innovation, investment, and job creation.

This event is hosted in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the Salt Lake Chamber, Brigham Young University, and Kirton McConkie.


Sonia Guzmán, Dominican Republic ambassador to the U.S.

Ambassador Sonia Guzmán is the first woman to represent the Dominican Republic to the U.S. government — as well as the first woman to serve as academic vice-rector at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and to be appointed to the Monetary Board. She has served as Secretary of State for Industry and Commerce, where she was the chief negotiator for the Dominican Republic in the DR-CAFTA Free Trade Agreement and the contract between the Rosario Dominicana gold mine and Placer Dome.

The daughter of Antonio Guzmán Fernández, former president of the Dominican Republic, she holds a bachelor’s degree in library science from the University of Antioquia, Colombia, and a postgraduate degree in school administration from the University of Puerto Rico. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and French.
