More Than 250 Business Leaders Gathered to Listen to Gov. Huntsman at WTC Utah’s 10 Year Anniversary

WTC Utah sets goal for the state to double exports in the next 10 years at event on Jan. 20

Salt Lake City – Gov. Jon Huntsman addressed more than 250 Utah business and community leaders today at World Trade Center Utah’s (WTC Utah’s) 10 Year Anniversary at The Grand America Hotel. In addition to Gov. Huntsman’s remarks, two major announcements were made: a new goal for state exports and the decision by WTC Utah to partner with the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute to begin a study on the creation of an inland port in Utah.

“We doubled exports over the last 10 years and have set the goal to do it again. I believe doubling exports will be necessary to maintain Utah’s stellar economic growth and create jobs for Utah’s burgeoning population,” said Derek B. Miller, WTC Utah president and CEO. “Having an inland port would be a game changer, which is why we have decided to take a closer look at the reality of doing that.”

In his remarks, Gov. Huntsman, former U.S. Ambassador to China and former presidential candidate, expressed his delight that WTC Utah is accomplishing precisely what he envisioned when he called for the creation of the organization a decade ago.

“World Trade Center Utah takes the state to a new level in terms of its ability to compete internationally. It is an important asset.” said Gov. Huntsman.

Today’s event marked the first in a new series of Thought Leader Symposia WTC Utah is launching quarterly designed to provide Utah businesses with an opportunity to learn from international experts. Governor Huntsman talked about U.S. China relations and the economic outlook for the nation.

The mission of WTC Utah is to help Utah companies think, act and succeed globally. As the statewide voice of international business, WTC Utah facilitates economic growth through increased exports and international awareness for Utah’s companies.

WTC Utah helps guide Utah companies into profitable global markets by offering signature services such as assessment of a company’s current global position or international strategy, education in the form of seminars and workshops to help develop global strategy and connections through the World Trade Center network and co-hosted local events.
