WTC Utah, the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and the Salt Lake Chamber welcomed Consul General Sylvain Fabi to Utah. Ahead of next month’s trade mission to Canada, discussions centered on strengthening economic ties, expanding trade opportunities, and addressing challenges that impact businesses on both sides of the border.
Consul General Fabi highlighted the depth of the Utah-Canada economic relationship, with Utah exporting over $1.5 billion in goods to Canada last year alone. However, ongoing trade barriers are creating uncertainty for businesses. Despite these challenges, both Utah and Canada see significant opportunities for collaboration in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals “The demand for energy and advanced technologies is growing rapidly,” Fabi noted. “Canada and Utah have the resources, talent, and innovation to lead together in these areas.”
Gov. Cox will lead the trade mission to Montreal and Toronto, where Utah businesses and government leaders will explore new partnerships and investment opportunities. “At the best of times, we need each other. At the worst of times, we need each other even more,” Fabi emphasized. The visit aims to reinforce the strong economic relationship between Utah and Canada while working toward solutions that ensure continued growth for both economies despite shifting trade policies.

His career with Global Affairs Canada has spanned various geographic and trade policy divisions and included assignments in Moscow, Havana, Santiago, Jamaica, and the Bahamas where he served as high commissioner for Canada.
Before becoming consul general in Denver, he was executive director of the U.S. Transboundary Affairs Division and Canada’s chief negotiator for the modernization of the Columbia River Treaty with the U.S.
