Overview

World Trade Center Utah, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, is coordinating an official state trade mission to Taiwan and South Korea, led by Governor Gary R. Herbert. Taiwan and South Korea offer tremendous opportunities for Utah companies interested in increasing their footprint in Asia. 

The trade mission will take place September 17 through September 21, 2018. This does not include travel dates or weekend cultural days before and after the trade mission.

This trade mission will give delegates seeking business opportunities in Taiwan & South Korea unparalleled, exclusive access to companies, government agencies and officials in the market.

Cost

Participation fee: There is a required $800 participation fee for each company participant who attends the trade mission. This cost includes:

  • Some meals
  • Ground transportation
  • All official trade mission events and materials

Additional Costs:

Lodging: Participants have the option of staying at the trade delegation hotel for the negotiated rate from September 15 – September 23 (eight nights): $1,800 for a single room (including tax and breakfast) or $2000 for a double room (including tax and breakfast for two). Participants should select this option when registering.

Participants who choose NOT to stay at the trade delegation hotel are responsible for booking their own accommodations.

Flights: Participants are responsible for booking and paying for their own flights. 

Cultural Excursion: Participants have the option of joining the trade delegation for a cultural excursion on September 16 in Seoul and September 21 in Taipei. The cost of each excursion is $100.

Gold Key: The U.S. Commercial Service’s Gold Key Service is an additional cost.

Why Taiwan

Taiwan is Utah’s 6th largest export destination.

In 2017, Utah exported $636 million in goods to Taiwan. This represents a 33% increase since 2013.

Why South Korea

South Korea is Utah’s 11th largest export destination.

In 2017, Utah exported $347 million in goods to South Korea.

In the last 15 years, Utah’s Trade with Korea has increased 293%.

Hotels

Trade mission participants have the option of staying at the trade delegation hotel for the negotiated rate of eight nights. If you reserve through WTC Utah, you will be booked accommodations from Saturday, September 15 to Sunday, September 23.

The rate for accommodations for eight nights is $1,800 for single (including tax and breakfast), $2,000 for double (including tax and breakfast for two).

Additional rooms beyond those dates must be reserved on your own.

Itinerary

Day 1: Saturday, September 15

Depart Salt Lake City for Seoul Friday morning (the day prior). After checking into the hotel, enjoy time on your own getting to know this breathtaking city. Visit the city’s center, the Myeong-dong shopping and cultural district, and maybe even visit Gyeongbokgung, Seoul’s historic palace. The hotel is located in a prime shopping and food district of the city.


Day 2: Sunday, September 16

Should you choose, join World Trade Center Utah for a cultural add-on Sunday afternoon. This tour will include a visit to one of Korea’s top destinations and dinner. The exact details are still being confirmed.


Day 3: Monday, September 17

This is the official start day of the trade mission beginning with a Market/Country Briefing with experts from the region. The day will consist of site visits to premier Korean companies, business to business matchmaking meetings, and your own individual research and meetings. The evening will end with a Governor’s Networking Reception at the U.S. Embassy, where you will have the opportunity to network with key Korean business, community and government leaders.


Day 4: Tuesday, September 18

Continue meeting potential representation, direct sales or joint ventures partners in Seoul. At noon, join us for a foreign direct investment luncheon that will highlight opportunities for Korean companies and capital groups to invest in Utah and Utah businesses. In the afternoon, join us at additional company site visits or meetings designed to better help you understand business culture in South Korea.


Day 5: Wednesday, September 19

Fly from Seoul, South Korea to Taipei, Taiwan. Participants are responsible for their own flight between cities. During your free time, explore Taipei’s bustling city center and world renown architecture.


Day 6: Thursday, September 20

The day will start with a Market/Country Briefing with experts from the region and then be followed by site visits to premier Taiwanese companies, business to business matchmaking meetings, and your own individual research and meetings. The evening will end with a Governor’s Networking Reception at the U.S. Embassy, where you will have the opportunity to network with key Korean business, community and government leaders


Day 7: Friday, September 21

Gold Key Service

The Gold Key Service through U.S. Commercial Service provides Utah companies traveling as part of the state’s trade mission to Mexico with pre-screened appointments to establish relationships with potential overseas agents, distributors, sales representatives, business partners and other local entities in-country.


Eligibility

You must be an established, export-ready U.S. company seeking to export goods or services of U.S. origin or that have at least 51% U.S. content to utilize this service.  All applicants will be screened by the Embassy or Consulate to ensure there is a viable market for their product/service before the service is accepted.


Pricing

The fee for a Gold Key Service is $950 for up to five meetings for small companies. If local demand is high for a product/service and warrants a second day of meetings, that day can be scheduled for $350.


The fee includes:

Pre-trip debriefings with U.S. Commercial Service trade specialists in the market on your product/service.

Up to five pre-screened appointments to establish relationships with potential overseas agents, distributors, sales representatives, business partners and other local entities in-country in your industry.

Post-meeting debrief onsite with trade specialists and assistance in developing appropriate follow-up strategies.

The fee for the service does not include other direct costs, such as translation, transportation, use of contractors, catering and venue rental.  These costs will be made known to the applicant if applicable.
